The Lammerskraal bred Red Ray, a son of the farm’s late, great sire Western Winter and their late, great broodmare Nacarat, has been retired and will stand at Klawervlei in 2017.
A R800 000 buy from the 2012 CTS Ready To Run Sale, Red Ray was a top class performer whose five wins included the 2016 G1 Mercury Sprint, where the entire accounted for the likes of Talktothestars, Real Princess, Fly By Night, Gulf Storm and current sprint sensation Trip To Heaven.
Winner of three of four outings at two (he was also second in the G1 SA Nursery), Red Ray won five times and earned over R1.9 million in stakes.
He won or placed in a total of seven G1 races, and demolished subsequent Horse Of The Year Legislate when landing the 2013 G3 Cape Classic over 1400m at Kenilworth.
Red Ray, a nominee for the title of Equus Champion Sprinter last season, is one of 20 G1 winners sired by Lammerskraal’s former great sire Western Winter, who is also responsible for leading first crop sire What A Winter.
He is one of stakes winners produced by the sadly now deceased Nacarat, who has a What A Winter colt entered on the 2017 National Yearling Sale.
