Lammerskraal Stud’s late, triple champion sire Western Winter enjoyed great success in the recently concluded 2017-2018 racing season.
His 30 winners for the season banked R7 349 612 in stakes, with Western Winter’s star performers including the G1 winners Attenborough (Computaform Sprint) and Redberry Lane (Garden Province Stakes), G1 Sun Met second Last Winter and the multiple stakes winning filly Fresnaye.
Most notably, however, Western Winter ended the 2017-2018 as South Africa’s Champion Broodmare Sire.
His daughters produced 129 winners of 204 races, with Western Winter daughters’ offspring earning R20 639 841 in prize money for the 2017-2018 racing season.
He was broodmare sire of nine individual black type winners during the past season, with his daughters producing all of Lobo’s Legend (G1 SA Classic), Tap O’ Noth (G1 Cape Guineas), MIyabi Gold (G2 Gold Bracelet), Bold Eagle (G3 Protea Stakes), Strathdon (G3 Cape Summer Stayers Hcp), Plano (PE Gold Cup), Widow’s Lamp (East Cape Oaks), Tambalang (Aquanaut Hcp) and Lesedi La Rona (Perfect Promise Sprint).
His daughter Wintersweet made news at Kenilworth this season when her sons Tap O’ Noth and Strathdon won graded races on the same day!
Western Winter, whose champion son What A Winter was South Africa’s Leading Second Crop Sire in 2017-2018, is also broodmare sire of Singapore Sling –winner of the 2018 Hong Kong Classic Cup.
