New owners for Abashiri

The Lammerskraal Stud bred Abashiri will be aimed at the G1 Sansui Summer Cup, for new owners Corner Stone Trust.

Trainer Mike Azzie said of the charismatic four-year-old, “I scratched him from The Sun Met straight after his run in the Queen’s Plate. He will now have a good rest and then I will start him off from scratch once more and aim him at the Summer Cup. He is a good horse and, while he might have lost his form, he won’t lose his ability.
Abashiri had a hard time winning the Triple Crown and I begged the owner (Adriaan van Vuuren) to put him away but he wanted to go for the July. The horse should never have run.
He has recently changed hands and will race in the name of Corner Stone Trust for an owner I used to train for some years ago.”

Formerly owned by Adriaan and Rika Van Vuuren, Abashiri has won or placed in eight of 12 outings, with his wins, apart from the Triple Crown –G2 Gauteng Guineas, G1 SA Classic, and G1 SA Derby, including the Listed Sea Cottage Stakes.

He is a son of Lammerskraal Stud’s top class sire Go Deputy, whose recent graded winners include Flying Ice, Icy Trail and Royal Badge. The latter, winner of the recent G3 Grand West Cape Summer Stayers, ran fourth in Saturday’s G2 Blue Label Telecoms Cape Stayers.
