Lammerskraal Stud look to have an extremely exciting prospect on their hands in the form of Varsity Lover.
The latter made an eye catching winning debut when scoring first time out at Kenilworth for trainer Candice Bass-Robinson and in-form rider Aldo Domeyer. Dispatched the 15-10 favourite for a maiden juvenile plate for fillies, Varsity Lover cruised up with 200m left to run and powered home to register a very smart one and a quarter length debut win over 1000 metres.
The Drakenstein Stud/Team Valor International bred filly was a R3.6 million purchase from the 2017 Cape Premier Yearling Sale and she looks a bright future prospect –both on the track and eventually in the Lammerskraal paddocks.
Varsity Lover is one of more than 20 two-year-old winners for leading sire Var this season and she is a half-sister to the smart winner Song Of Happiness.
She is out of the outstanding Captain Al sired mare Captain’s Lover –a stakes winner in three different countries. Her seven wins included the G1 Cape Fillies Guineas, the G3 Prix du Pin (in France) and the Matchmaker Stakes (in North America).
South Africa’s Champion 3YO Female Miler of 2007-2008, Captain’s Lover is a half sister to the brilliant Ebony Flyer, whose eight career wins included the G1 Cape Fillies Guineas, G1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes and G1 South African Fillies Sprint.
Varsity Lover’s second dam, Sunshine Lover, was the Equus Broodmare Of The Year in 2010-2011.
