Lammerskraal Stud’s late, great resident sire Western Winter continues to make his mark on the South African turf –nearly five years after his death.

Western Winter’s influence was well and truly felt in the Cape Summer Season this year.
He is the sire of the Lammerskraal Stud bred G2 Diadem Stakes winner Bishop’s Bounty (who is out of the farm’s wonderful broodmare Nacarat), as well as the 2018 G1 Sun Met runner up Last Winter.
The latter, who appears destined to have an international campaign, has won four of only six outings and has already banked over R1.3 million in stakes.
Last Winter, who looks set to provide Western Winter with another G1 triumph in the not too distant future, is now South Africa’s second top rated thoroughbred with a merit rating of 119.
Bishop’s Bounty’s own brother Brutal Force also did well when a close up fourth in the recent G1 Betting World Cape Flying Championship, with the son of Western Winter now having banked in excess of R2 000 000.
Western Winter also made his mark this season, both as a sire of sires, and as a broodmare sire.

His triple Equus Champion son, and former Champion First Crop Sire, What A Winter really enjoyed a memorable Cape Summer Season this year. What A Winter is the sire of Magical Wonderland, Dutch Philip and Agent Of Fortune –winners of the respective G2 Sceptre Stakes, CTS 1200 and Kuda Sprint respectively this Cape Season.
What A Winter is currently South Africa’s Leading Second Crop Sire and also heads South Africa’s 2YO Sires List.
Western Winter, 11th on the General Sires Log –according to Sporting Post statistics, is also (according to NHA) the second leading Broodmare Sire in South Africa this season. At the time of writing, Western Winter daughters have been responsible for the earners of over R9.7 million in 2017-2018.
High class performers representing Western Winter as a broodmare sire this season include brilliant G1 Forus Cape Guineas winner Tap O’ Noth, the latter’s G3 Cape Summer Stayers Handicap winning half-brother Strathdon, and Singapore Sling.
The latter, who is set to contest the HKG1 Classic Cup later this month, showed himself to be among the top horses competing in Hong Kong when runner up in the HKG1 Hong Kong Classic Mile recently.
