Lammerskraal Stud’s exciting young broodmare Cantabella gained yet another boost to her pedigree when her full brother Los Barbados (Galileo –Milanova) won at Meydan on Thursday night.
Unlucky when fourth on the opening night of the 2018 Dubai World Cup Carnival, Los Barbados was given a fine, front running ride by jockey Adrie De Vries to capture the EGA Al Taweelah Trophy in smart fashion.
With none of the other seven runners interested in contesting the pace, Dutchman De Vries was able to set steady fractions before gradually quickening the tempo on the back straight. At the top of the home straight, they committed for home and Los Barbados stayed on resolutely to land the spoils.
De Vries explained: “Looking at the race tactically beforehand, we did not think there would be much pace so decided, if that was the case, to go to the front. There were only eight runners today whereas, last time, we never had much space in a big field. We took the blinkers off and everything went smoothly. Hopefully he can build on this and it would be nice to think he can win again but he is not a horse you would run every week; he needs a break between outings.”
Los Barbados, winning for a second time, is out of Danehill’s top class daughter Milanova-winner of the G3 Tokyo City Cup and runner up in the G1 SAJC Australasian Oaks and G1 Fruit ‘N Veg Stakes. Milanova, a full-sister to champion and successful sire Holy Roman Emperor, is also dam of G3 Munster Oaks winner Pretty Perfect.
Milanova’s daughter Cantabella, purchased by Lammerskraal for R3.1 million at the 2016 CTS Mares & Fillies For Stud Select Sale, had a Var colt this season.
